Saturday, February 23, was a great day to get the Ts on the road for a drive to Round Top and the surrounding areas. The sun was out and the temperature was perfect so several families met at the IHOP and then took off for a day of touring.
Traveling with Ernie and Ginger Wentrcek, event organizers, were Sam and JoAnn Mangrum of Waco, Bill and Pat Sherrill of Cypress-Fairbanks, Don and Amber Warner of Calvert; Ben and Nancy Hardeman of Bryan and Bob and Becky Wright of Bryan. Tommy and Patsy Supak, of Brenham, met the group in Independence, and they continued their trip down the scenic La Bahia Trail to Burton, where they were met by Don and Mary Ann Simmang of Lincoln.
Sitting in a very picturesque part of Texas, Round Top is located in Fayette County and has a population of 77. Magnificent farmland, captivating farm houses and cattle dot the landscape, and to ride at speeds of 35-40 mph allows one to really appreciate the beautiful surroundings and historical significance of the area.
After eating a fantastic meal at Royers, the group chatted with friends and walked around the area. Of particular interest was a collection of restored log cabins, frontier homes and old buildings that set in a park area adjacent to the town square. One could just imagine a frontier family living in the structures and farming the land.
The tour group gathered together once again and traveled to Warrenton, a short distance down the road. Longhorn cattle grazed in the pastures along the route, barely raising their heads when the Ts passed by.
The last stop on the tour was Festival Hill. The concert hall is used for performances by aspiring young musicians who study with world-renowned faculty. Beautiful architecture, gardens and the Edythe Bates Old Chapel, which was built in 1883, were highlights of this area.
