I think we were all feeling the itch to get out of the house and into our cars for a little ride, and thus the first tour of 2010 was organized. Ross usually likes to get a tour in-between Christmas and New Years if he can, and this year that opportunity came on Jan 2nd. After some calling and an email, we had the basic makings of a tour and we were off. We met at our shop at 10:00 A.M. That is a bit later than a normal tour would start but we wanted to give it time to “warm up” a little. It was a bright sunny morning, but still cold for the T’s as it was in the 50’s. We had a great turnout with Ross, Barbara and I in Bruce’s 1915 Touring, Lance Bullard in his ’31 Tudor, Louis and Kay Gaston in their ’30 Tudor, Jim and Stephanie Singleton in their ’26 Coupe, Ben and Nancy Hardeman in their ’30 Cabriolet, Michael McDonald, Rachel Wendt, Austin Payne and his brother in our ’25 touring car, Art and Gloria Langrish in their ’17 Roadster and Jeff and Luke Cordes in their ’21 Centerdoor.
We left the shop a little after 10 once everyone had arrived and headed out Hwy 60 toward Snook. After about 10 miles we stopped at Twisters convenience store to check everything over, make sure everyone had gas and everything was running fine. A few people got some hot coffee and away we went on Hwy 50 towards Independence. Just after cresting a hill the other side of Independence we noticed Tommy and Patsy Supak, of Brenham, in their 1916 touring car waiting to join us. We followed the old Brazos River bottom road to the Brenham Municipal Airport. We run this route over to the airport fairly often as it is a nice short route that leads to a great little 50’s themed diner with great burgers and shakes. The servers even wear poodle skirts!
As we waited for a special treat we visited with old friends and made some new ones. Art and Gloria are from North Carolina and were in town visiting their son and his family for the holidays. They are hoping to move here in the spring once they sell their house back East. We have gotten to know them and Ross arranged to transport their 1917 Roadster to town, where we are storing it for them until they move.
Soon our special treat came zooming over. Club member Denny Irvine from Houston flew up with some friends and they were flying in formation 4 deep! What a sight to see! They flew over twice with smoke trails and all, even performing the stunt where one of the planes peels off separately from the group, the missing man formation. After landing safely they joined us for burgers.
As always there were several dogs on tour. Our Bailey was most put out he didn’t get a burger. He was joined by our Jasmine and the Supak’s Rhett. I was eager to have the dogs go on the trip so I would have a built in lap warmer! And it worked! Between the bright sun, all of my layers of clothing and the dogs I wasn’t cold!
After a brief discussion of our afternoon route, we were on our way. Denny flew back home with his flying buddies and mentioned he was ready for another tour to drive on. We drove the back roads of Brenham, thanks to Tommy. We almost went by their home, but turned off right before it. We made our way to Burton and stopped at the Cotton Gin Museum for a look around and a potty break. Jeff and Luke left us here so they could head back to their farm and Tommy and Patsy went just a bit further and then he turned off to head home.
Next stop…Dairy Queen. It doesn’t matter how cold it is on a Model T tour, it isn’t complete without an afternoon ice cream stop! Bailey got his burger, although he did have to share it with Jazz. After enjoying our frozen treats we headed back to College Station as fast as we could. We were losing the heat from the sun.
As we got into town everyone veered off in the direction of their home and those of us that returned to the shop decided that the day was a nice tour and we needed to do it again soon. We always say that! There were no breakdowns - not even a mis-fire, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and be glad to get out. If you joined us, thanks - we had a great time. If you couldn’t, we’ll be looking out for you on the next tour to come along soon!
