Calvert, Texas

Don and Amber Warner invited members of the Texas Touring Ts to their Victorian home in Calvert for a fajita meal on Saturday, March 01, 2008. Those who made the trip were Ben and Nancy Hardeman in their 1927 Model T Fordor, Ernie and Ginger Wentrcek in their 1925 Model T Tudor Sedan, Tommy and Patsy Supak in their 1915 Touring car, and Bill Sherrill in his 1914 Touring car. Also attending were Bob and Becky Wright, who rode with the Wentrceks. While in Calvert, host Don Warner joined in with his 1925 Touring car.

Ben and Nancy served as the tour leaders for this trip. Ben maintained his reputation for finding the back roads of Texas. By taking these routes, we can see many parts of Texas that we would have missed had we traveled a more direct path. The landscape is mostly void of any greenery right now, but should be bursting with wildflowers and vegetation in the next few weeks.

After eating a wonderful lunch and touring the Warner’s beautiful home, the group went downtown and walked through the shops. Calvert, known as a cotton producing community in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, has been more recently noted as one of the antique capitals of Texas.

The tour then continued to Virginia Park, where a gazebo, built around the time of the Civil War, was the center of attraction. Bag-pipers and several bands were scheduled to perform during the evening under the roof of the giant structure. The Texas Touring Ts parked their cars in front of the gazebo, and local residents enjoyed viewing them and conversing with the club members.

The tour began at 9:00 A.M., ended around 5:00 P.M. and covered approximately 105 miles. It was a full day of fun, and another great run for the Texas Touring Ts.
